The white flames burst out of Lord Tyaan’s mouth and rushed right for Euddán.

There was nothing he could do. His desperate attack had missed. He had been bold, going for the kill instead of protecting himself.

Lumi jumped before him right into the stream of white fire. Wings burst from her body as she became a hawk. She drank the Illumination. Euddán gasped behind her, watching the goddess shield him from the flames.

Lord Tyaan closed his mouth, his eye-flowers tightening until they were almost closed buds focused right on Lumi. “What did you do? How? What are you?”

“Lumi!” cawed the goddess. She flapped her wings, throwing herself back. She landed with grace on Euddán’s shoulder, her talons sinking through his stone pauldron and shirt beneath to rest on his bare skin. The warmth of her surged confidence through Euddán.

“That’s right,” he said, a grin spreading on his lips. “I have Lumi on my side.”

“Yes!” cawed Lumi-Hawk.

With a roar, Euddán surged forward and slashed Stone Defender, Lumi’s clawed talons gripping his shoulder but not hurting him. His blade flashed, a blur of lead-gray that almost cut Lord Tyaan in half. The dragon’s wings yanked him back with a powerful flap.

Another burst of white flames exploded from the shrub’s mouth. Euddán turned his right shoulder, thrusting Lumi into the flames. She inhaled, sucking in the madness, her wings spread wide to shield him. Her left one went right through Euddán’s head, leaving behind a tingle of heat.

“What are you?” Lord Tyaan demanded, his reedy voice buzzing. “That’s not possible!”

Euddán pumped Foundation into his legs to jump ahead quickly, a spring attack faster than his last ones. He was on the dragon before Lord Tyaan could react, swinging with a hard side slash. The shrubwoman’s arm blocked Euddán’s sword, white flames burning amid the corded vines that formed the thick limb.

Euddán’s sword didn’t sheer through the arm like it should have. Instead of being cut in half, the dragon was flung back from the force of the powerful blow. He crashed to the glittering ground and rolled into one of the dragon skeletons. He sprawled over the bones, one hand resting on the head, brushing one of the horns. The possessed shrub glanced down at it.

“What?” he asked.

Euddán rushed at the enemy, crossing the distance.

“What are these bones?” Lord Tyaan demanded as he sprung to his feet.

Euddán smiled beneath his helm. “They’re stoneborers. Ask that wyrm who came with you. They can tell you all about them.”

“These are the bones of dragons!” Lord Tyaan growled, his voice deep and vibrating with anger.

“Stoneborers!” shouted Euddán as he charged the last few paces and swung his sword.
